an aesthetically pleasing book haul

Hi my loves,

I’m…yeah. I have no excuses. Here’s another book haul. Someone take my credit card away from me. I do have a (kind of) excuse / reasoning behind this particular book haul though so, here goes…

I had this strong urge to just…buy some beautiful books. I hardly ever buy books for their covers or because I think they look aesthetically pleasing and I just thought yanno what, I’m gonna buy some books that look beautiful so that they look beautiful on my shelves (and also so that I can read them, of course). I needed a bit of reading motivation to get back into the swing of things for 2020 and so I was like yeah, I’m gonna buy some books with some sick covers, basically. I’ve never really done that before and so I was excited.

I 100% prefer to read paperbacks over hardbacks because it’s just a better experience all round, but for a good, solid, beautiful book…you need to buy it in hardback. They just do the job better in terms of the visual aspects. As I said, I don’t really like to read hardbacks but for this little spree that’s what I was going for because…I just needed the aesthetics, basically. 100% going to do this more often from now on though because it honestly made the whole thing so much more exciting.

This all happened because I was in a book store around…6/7 months ago now? And there was this book that completely caught my eye. It wasn’t on display where you could see it, it was kind of tucked away on the front of a shelf behind a corner but I saw it and was just absolutely mesmerised by it, I’ve honestly never been so drawn to a book before in my life, ever. It was the strangest thing. I was contemplating over whether I should buy it or not but then I read the blurb and thought actually, it’s probably not really my thing and so I talked myself out of it.

And then I went home and spent the next 6 months thinking about the book and wishing that I’d bought it to which, the obvious answer would be to just…go back and buy it. However kids, I could not for the life of me remember what the book was called, who the author was or what the cover even really looked like. I only remembered about 30% of the cover since over time it had all slipped my memory and so I just could not find it anywhere and I was distraught basically. I was like Chloe why didn’t you buy it when you saw it the first time.

And then last week I took one final attempt at finding the book again and alas…I found it.

And that book is…

Frances Hardinge

I do not know what it is about this book cover but it’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever laid eyes on. I’m literally hypnotised by it and I have no idea why. I can’t stop looking at it. Objectively, there are books with more beautiful covers out there but for me personally, this one is top of the top. I don’t know what it is about it. I’m like…a magpie seeing silver for the first time. It’s just the most beautiful, aesthetically pleasing and well put together…image…concept…thing I’ve ever seen. I’ve never been so drawn to something before.

It’s also signed !! Which is super nice as well (because as you guys know, I love signed stuff).

I feel like this is…something. Like she’s going to be my new favourite author or something. I don’t know, I feel like this is all significant and I’m writing it here now to call it first and if I happen to be wrong then you can all come back to read this and laugh at me for being dumb. Either way, this book is the most gorgeous thing I’ve ever seen. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.

Again, have you ever seen anything so beautiful. I want this whole cover tattooed on me. Right now. There’s this certain type of book design that I really, really love and it’s something along the lines of this. I don’t know how to describe it but it’s a category that this book and Deeplight fall into…I can’t explain the style but basically, any book that falls into this category I just automatically love. I don’t know anything about this book but I think it’s YA? I think it may be a little young for me but at this point I don’t care because the cover is just so beautiful – the inside is…heavenly. Am I really getting this obsessed over a dustjacket and a cover?…Yes, yes I am.

Just look how beautiful it is !! I have never seen anything so pretty IN MY LIFE.

Malorie Blackman

Now, this last one was just a book I added to my cart in order to qualify for free shipping. When I said this in a previous book haul everyone was like Chloe !! Use Book Depository !! It’s free shipping !! And I’m here to tell you that I always use Book Depository. Always !! But sometimes on very rare occasions I don’t use Book Depository, and that’s because sometimes I need to use Waterstones to buy beautiful hardcovers like this. So do not panic. I hear you. I’m there.  I really wanted another hardback to complete my little haul and then after scrolling through the website for a bit I saw this one. The cover isn’t as aesthetically pleasing as the others but I thought it looked interesting anyway – this one is also a signed copy. Upon arrival…this book is huge, like, one of the heftiest books I now own. It’s giant !! I absolutely didn’t expect it at all so I was pretty amazed when it arrived (maybe I’m just easily impressed). Again, I don’t know anything about this book but it kind of gives me Angie Thomas vibes and I love her, also something that I did discover upon doing a little research is that it’s actually the fifth book in a series which I didn’t realise…well done Chloe. I think I’ll be able to get away with reading it without having read the rest of the series but…we’ll see. Wish me luck.

This one is also a signed copy!

I bought this one a couple of weeks after the others and even though it’s not “aesthetically pleasing” per say (or a hardback for that matter) I am so excited to read it. I won’t be able to for a while though as this is a book I bought to read on holiday when I go to Mexico in a few months! Reading the blurb it just seemed like the perfect holiday read, and not in a Summer love cliche romance kind of way (as you guys know they’re not my thing). I can’t wait to read it and I just keep staring at it on my shelf and thinking…soon…soon. Do I need help? Possibly.

And there we have it loves! I said in my last post that the hauls were going to stop soon but eh…maybe not. I need to gain some self control on the spending before we get to that point. It may never come.

All my love,

Chloe .xx

  1. Wow these books look all so beautiful! 😍📚 You can never have enough books. I love to buy from Book depositery because of free shipping but using other websites now and then is okay too. I’m excited to know what you think of them. It’s totally okay to buy books for their covers if they are so beautiful as these ones.

    1. Thank you so much lovely! You’re so right hehe and yes, Book Depository is my favourite !! It’s my go to for everything, I’ve been using it for years now. So glad it exists!! xx

  2. We honestly have a pile of about 10 books that we consider “coffee table books” that we have never read but just sit on our coffee table for aesthetic purposes for visitors to flick through whenever they are around. Don’t judge us! xx

  3. I know they say dont judge a book by its cover but ahhh I am such a sucker for a cute looking book. I absolutely love having my bookcase full of pretty looking covers and these are mesmerising! I hope they are as good as they look!xxx

    1. Right?! Honestly going to try and do way more of this because I loved it! I’ve only read Deeplight so far (just finished) and I absolutely loved it, fingers crossed the others are the same! xxx

  4. My god, I have to agree these books are goddamn stunning! It’s true, usually softback isn’t as aesthetic! What great choices you made, and I have so many books that I don’t pick up that I still think about now but no no no! Gotta finish the current list first! I can’t wait to hear your thought on Deeplight, it sounds surreal.

  5. I think one of the greatest joys in life is seeing a book that is so beautiful and completely falling in love haha! Just looked up Outline on Goodreads – “a novel about writing and talking, about self-effacement and self-expression, about the desire to create and the human art of self-portraiture in which that desire finds its universal form.” AAHHHHH it sounds so interesting, I added it to my list! Great book haul as always Chlo xx

    1. Yes! I don’t usually do it because I’m kind of like…don’t judge a book by its cover – most of my favourite books actually have quite plain covers and if I only ever read books based on what their front covers were, I’d never have found half of my favourites. Outline sounds so amazing right ?! Like, the perfect holiday read. I cannot wait !! I’m REALLY hoping I’m not disappointed haha, I’ll be gutted. I did think of you when I bought it though actually – I think it’s right up your street !! xx

      1. Chloe Chloe Chloe. I have been meaning to tell you this. I was recently at Hatchards in London (on the 23rd) and I actually saw Outline just lying there. And it was even the same edition you have! I instantly thought of you, I mean how could I not? The only reason I know this book exists is because of you. Sadly I didn’t buy it though, as I went a little overboard in London and ended up coming home with yet another 5 books lol. Seriously, I never learn. Now I have a ton (A TON) of unread books just sitting on my shelf, waiting to be read! (not complaining though, it feels a bit like heaven I must admit) xx

        1. Uh book haul soon please !! I wanna see !! Any excuse for me to get inspired to buy some more books that I definitely don’t need or have room for haha. So weird that you saw it just lying there though !! Maybe it’s a sign…I can’t wait for July to roll around so I can finally read it !! xx

  7. “Deeplight” and “The Deathless Girls” have very beautiful covers. The cover for “Crossfire” also looks pretty good! So, the books in this haul have brought your grand total of books you have bought just this year alone to 3,650, haha. No judgement, I genuinely love how much you love reading and books! It is so adorable the way you gush about books haha xx

  8. Wow, all of those books really are aesthetically pleasing- Deeplight especially. It is such a beautiful cover and I am adding it to my TBR solely based on that. I’ve also had my eye on The Deathless Girls for a while now. I’m excited to hear your thoughts on it 🙂

    1. I have about 50 pages left to read of Deeplight and I’ve absolutely fallen in love with it, I know it’s going to be one of my favourite books of 2020 already even though we’re only in February !! I’ll definitely do a review of The Deathless Girls once I’ve read it! Thank you for reading lovely xx

  9. The Noughts And Crosses series is absolutely amazing – one of my absolute FAVSSSSSS and I would recommend reading the others first but I’m sure you’ll love them. Definitely let me know what you think ❤️ Oh and they’re bringing out a BBC series of the books which I’m unbelievably excited for – look up the trailer xxx

      1. Hmm it may not make a load of sense, but if I remember correctly they do recap a bit? I think it would be good if you could get your hands on the first two before reading that one, but if not you’d probably be able to follow the story haha. Yeah, I’m unbelievably excited for it haha. Ooooo and what are your thoughts on the upcoming atbp movie?!?! I just reread it for the fourth time lol xxx

        1. Ahh okay, thank you! & I’ve been waiting for the movie for 4 years now literally counting down the days because the whole process was the slowest thing I’ve ever witnessed and the dates were always getting pushed back, and I told myself that by the time it came out I’d hopefully be ready (stable) enough to watch it but alas, nope !! I haven’t even watched the trailer because I simply can’t bring myself to do it. Emotionally / mentally not quite there yet so I’ll be waiting until I’m in a good place before I watch it which, could be years for all I know! I’m relying on my friends to watch it first to tell me if they think it’ll be okay for me to watch or not hahah. Oh life .xxx

          1. I know how much it means to you and so I kinda understand how you feel. The trailer doesn’t really tell you much, but I’m really hesitant to watch it too, just because I think they could so easily miss the point and turn it into some cliche YA romance when it’s so so SO much more than that. However, I think Jennifer has worked with them quite closely so I hope her vision and characters that we love so much will stay true to the book and it’s message. I don’t actually have Netflix, but when I do get to watch it, I’ll let you know what I think. Nothing could ever top the book though ❤ xxx

            1. The day they announced Justice as Finch I didn’t really know what to feel, but the thing I kept telling myself is that Jennifer picked these people herself and worked so closely with and had such a big involvement with the whole thing including the script, so I trust her judgement 100%. She knows this story better than anyone ❤xx
